商品的帝国

概述

商品的帝国 is a British Academy Research Project that is a 伦敦大学-based collaboration between the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) 和 School of Oriental 和 African Studies (SOAS).

The mutually reinforcing relationship between ‘commodities’ 和 ’empires’ has long been recognised. Over the last six centuries the quest for profits has driven imperial expansion, with the global trade in commodities fuelling the ongoing industrial revolution. These ‘commodities of empire’, which became transnationally mobilised in ever larger quantities, 包括食品(e.g. wheat, rice, bananas); industrial crops (e.g. cotton, rubber, linseed 和 palm oils); stimulants (e.g. sugar, tea, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, opium); 和 ores (e.g. tin, copper, gold, diamonds). Their exp和ed production 和 global movements brought vast spatial, 社会, economic 和 cultural changes to both metropoles 和 colonies.

In the 商品的帝国 project, we explore the networks through which particular commodities circulated both within 和 in the spaces between empires, with particular attention to local processes originating in Africa, 亚洲, 加勒比海, 和拉丁美洲, which significantly influenced the outcome of the encounter between the world economy 和 regional societies. We adopt a comparative approach 和 explore the experiences of peoples subjected to different imperial hegemonies.

Research Project:  Commodity Frontiers 和 Environmental Change in a Challenged Coastal Region of Cuba

Cuba street scene, post-Hurricane

‘Commodity Frontiers 和 Environmental Change in a Challenged Coastal Region of Cuba’ is a collaboration between 商品的帝国, 在ILAS系统, School of Advanced Study, 伦敦大学, 和 Fundación Núñez Jiménez de la Naturaleza y el Hombre 在古巴.  This AHRC-funded project, 2019年4月开始, will establish a global network of scholars working on the historical impact of commodity frontiers 和 extreme weather events on vulnerable communities.

The project will involve the production of a pilot three-part series of 20-minute documentaries, 英语和西班牙语, exploring how a history of hurricanes 和 global commodity frontiers has impacted on the natural environment, 和 coastal 和 rural communities made vulnerable by excessive exploitation of natural resources 和 inequalities of the global market. It will focus on the local community of Caibarién, which was in the eye of Hurricane Irma in September 2017, 和 surrounding region of Remedios, 在古巴中北部.

As well as bringing together relevant experts, a group of local people will be established in Caibarién, with direct experience 和 knowledge of the historical changes in the area, as they relate to local commodity frontiers 和 impact of hurricanes. Their input will be particularly important for the production of the documentaries. A series of workshops will also be held 在古巴, exploring the wider themes 和 showing the results of the filming.

The films will be written 和 produced by 教授. 吉恩•斯塔布斯Dr. 乔纳森•Curry-Machado 和导演的 教授. 迈克尔Chanan.
